It's one of those questions we must get 10 times a day:
"Do you have to store your cigars at the right temperature?" "What does that dial say on the front of your cigar box?" "Should I store my cigars in the fridge"
Ask the old wives and they'll tell you to chuck some apple peel or a bit of potato in the box or try store it in the fridge. Ask a tobacconist and they'll tell you that's a mistake! Doing so will build up mildew and affect the flavour of your expensive cigars. Oh and a fridge actually dries out your cigars, leave them a week and they'll have dried up, cracked and lost most of their flavour! Here at The Black Swan Tobacconist we have always told our customers who don't have the luxury of a humidor to store their cigars in a container were they can still breath and place a bit of damp sponge away from the Cigars to humidify the air. The Cigars will then gradually draw moisture from the air. That was until Xikar developed the Drymistat Humistore!
The problem with a piece of sponge is you can't easily control level of humidity. A very damp sponge will add a lot of humidity and a drier sponge will add a little so you constantly have to monitor the Cigars. The Xikar humistore contains some magic crystals that regulate the humidity of the air. Simply soak the pouch in water until the crystals swell into a gel. Shake off any excess water and place the pouch inside your humidor or chosen container. If the humidity drops below 70% the crystals will release moisture, which will keep your Cigars in perfect condition until the pouch has fully dried up. Then simply re-soak and re-use.
