Talamona di Paolo Croci They were difficult times in Italy when Cornelio Talamona, a carpenter by trade, began to manufacture pipes in his bottega in 1929 to earn an additional income. When his son Cesare left school in 1945 at the age of 15, times were worse. There was neither a place for an apprenticement nor another job to be found in the destitute and war-torn country. And Cesare felt no desire to a continuing school attendance which moreover would have costed money. So the father, beset by worries, decided the boy might lend him a helping hand in the workshop where at the time, priority was placed in building furniture. In 1970 Cesare started the pipe business, based near Lake Varese in the Lombardy region he soon became well known around Italy for his craft. Talamona quickly became famous around the world for his creativity in large pipes. Once Cesare retired in 2007 at the venerable age of 85 years old, and not wanting to bring his legacy of high Italian craft to an end, he entrusted everything to Paolo Croci, who, in 2010 started the limited production of the brand, respecting the will of Cesare Talamona to continue to produce high quality, handmade, artisanal pipes in generous sizes. They continue to this day with the motto "Every pipe has a soul and who buys it finds it themselves".
Reverse Calabash Featuring a rather unique design, the Talamona Mini Reverse Calabash is the same idea as a traditional calabash, There is a larger second chamber that allows the smoke to cool before entering your mouth. The “reverse” part comes in because the smoke cools inside the shank rather than beneath the bowl. The entire shank has been drilled out to 14mm wide and 28mm deep.
Bog Oak Bog oak, also known as Abonos or Morta is a material from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds, if not thousands of years. The wood is usually stained black by tannins dissolved in the acidic water. Bog Oak represents the early stages in the fossilisation of wood, with further stages ultimately forming jet, lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years.
Talamona di Paolo Croci Mini Reverse Calabash Bog Oak This slanted poker reverse calabash is a stunning example of the high quality workmanship expected to come out of the Talamona studio. It's generous sized bowl sits wonderfully in the hand and is finished with a chestnut stain and rusticated to produce an ultra cool, sweet smoke. There is a cumberland acrylic band and it comes with a choice of a dark amber stem, a brown cumberland stem, a dark grey stem and a black churchwarden stem. These pipes are truly a work of art and it will be a real dilemma as to whether you will want to smoke it or put it on display for all to see.
