Charles Rattray's Briar Pipes Charles Rattray's master blenders have an impecable worldwide reputation for their unique tobacco blends and unrivalled character. You can be forgiven for not knowing that Rattray's also produce pipes as they were only released onto the general market in 2012. Their pipes were formerly reserved for exclusive sale in their Perth shop but they have answered many prayers by releasing these stunning pipes to retailers worldwide.
Charles Rattrays Six Friends Number 21 Briar Pipe We saw the Six Friends range of pipes at the last UK trade show and instantly snapped them up before even looking at the rest of the range. They are simply stunning as the Briar has been sandblast and stained with a rich, dark Brown stain before sanding to bring out the natural Briar on the raised character, which contrast beautifully with the amber coloured fishtail stem. The Number 21 a stunning Poker shape with a high bowl for a good deep fill. The Poker has got to be one of the most stunning shapes that has increased dramatically in popularity over the last decade. It is quite a high pipe with a deep bore, which helps keep the char away from the elements to prevent flare ups. The consistently thick briar wall throughout the bowl makes for a very robust pipe that is very resilient to overheating and as the shank starts further up the bowl it gives a good depth of Briar underneath where many over enthusiastic smokers who heavily ream the pipe tend to burn through. And of course how can we not mention the fact the pipe stands un-aided to keep the sideboard free of ash and the misuses happy while also making a good display piece. The stunning amber effect stem also has a nice wide mouth piece to aid in gripping the pipe and keeping the strain on the teeth down.
9mm Absorbent Filter The Charles Rattray's Six Friends pipes are designed for use with the any 9mm absorbent stem filters. The larger diameter allows more smoke to pass through the filter, with less restriction, which makes for a better draw compared to the 6mm filters. The highly absorbent filters have a very high surface area resulting in excellent absorption of the tar as the smoke passes through without affecting draw or flavour.
The pipes have a standard 9mm bore so can be used with any brand of 9mm filter if preferred. Alternatively the filter can be removed all together for smokers who prefer a totally un-restricted full on smoke.
MARBLED STEMS: The marbled mouthpiece in this picture is a one off and is unlikely to be the exact mouthpiece you will receive. There is variation from pipe to pipe with substantial differences in colours, patterns and marbling.
