Barling started life as a Silversmiths in the late part of the 1700s. Sensing an opportunity, Benjamin Barling began outfitting Meerschaum bowls with exquisite silver mountings. The company received recognition for their work at The Great Exhibition in 1851. Over the ensuing years, they transitioned into carving their own Briar pipes and subsequently Barling pipes continue to occupy a special place in the pipe world. Their engineering and craftsmanship were impressively advanced for their time and significantly influenced how pipes would be made in the following decades.
